Debi Pearl's latest children's book, YELL AND TELL, is written in delightful rhyme. It presents the topic of child abuse in a straightforward manner on a child’s level. Abusers are shown as persuasive, not always a stranger, and not always an adult. Instead of identifying a certain category of person, children are taught to identify bad behaviors and YELL AND TELL immediately.

Samuel is a little boy and the book's main character. Samuel has several short discussions with his mom. They discuss several scenarios and how Samuel must always yell and tell when anyone tries to lure him to touch or expose private areas.

The fun and colorful images follow Samuel, his mom, his dog and cat throughout his active day. The pictures are not graphic, anatomical, or menacing. Rather, it’s presented as if Samuel is a super-hero kid; standing up for that which is right and alerting others if he encounters dangerous individuals.

I liked the way Samuel’s mother asks him to come to her if he encounters inappropriate pictures or the temptation to hide and engage in unacceptable behaviors. He's praised and commended when he resists the temptation to do wrong and get away with it.

You may have noticed in our latest issue Mike’s article for parents that discover their child has been exposed to sexual activity (WHEN THE WORST HAPPENS, June 2010). We’ve also made available for free an audio download called SEX EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN. This is because we sometimes get heartbreaking letters. The most heartbreaking ones have to do with children.

Yard chickens develop a natural pecking order. Mama hens brood and raise little chicks. Roosters protect the hens and vie for position. At least, that's how it used to be.

Today, if you go to the feed store and get little chicks, you’ll find that brooding and natural mothering tendencies have been bred out of them. This is because corporate chicken farms need to have everything streamlined. This means that eggs are hatched in a hatchery and baby chicks are never taught to scratch for bugs by a mama hen.

If you place these distant descendants of yard chickens into an actual yard, they will be defenseless. The hens weren’t taught how to be mamas, so they don’t know how to teach the chicks. The roosters never learned from example either, so they bully rather than protect. These birds won’t know what to do when a hawk’s shadow flitters across the grass. In the chaos of that chicken yard, they’d all be easy pickings for the first predator to show up. Of course, the chicks would be the first to go.

So, what do you do when the chicks are in danger? You call to them. You cluck a warning. You show them where to hide and how to run to help. Chicks need to know that there are bad guys and they need to know how to stay safe.

That’s why I’ve been working, working, working to complete another children’s book called YELL AND TELL. I don’t know when it will be complete, but I’ll REALLY appreciate your prayers as things move forward. Keep watching my blog and No Greater Joy Magazine, and I’ll update you on the progress!

MAKING HOME FUN WITH A CROCK POT MARRIAGE

My friends and I gathered around the supper table. It had been a long day of classes and lectures. Our conversation turned to our favorite things: our spouses and our children!

We enjoyed a good chuckle over the antics of our children, and got to know each other a little better.

One of the people there was a bearded farmer named Johnny. His face lit up as he talked about investing a few dollars so that he could get each of his kids a headlamp. When the days get short, his crew plays outside a little longer. I could just imagine hearing little ones laughing and running, playing tag after dark, while their battery-operated lights cut through the night.

We could tell Johnny missed his family -- especially his wife! He seemed a little lost without her.

The conversation turned to the sadness we sometimes see in families and marriages. Johnny's eyes took on an earnest twinkle as he said, 'What most men don't realize is that women are like crock pots.'

I wasn't sure where he was going with this. Was he talking about handles or the shape?

He seemed amused by our puzzled looks and continued.

'Well if you want to have a good meal for supper that night, you've got to put some good stuff in the pot and turn it on long BEFORE you expect to eat. If you wait 30 minutes before eating and toss some frozen stuff in there, you can't blame the crock pot when your supper is cold and undercooked. It's the same with wives and marriage. You gotta think ahead, fill it up with the right ingredients, add a spark and keep it warm if you want something good in return.'

I stopped chewing and stared. He was right. Farmer Johnny got it right and put the profound in simple terms. You want fun? Invest in fun. You want a good marriage? Put good stuff in there. Makes sense. Smart man!

They laugh when they see their Big Papa coming (that’s me) because Big Papa is laughing and they don’t care why just as long as he laughs with them.

My granddaughters laugh with joy after giving their baby dolls a spanking for “being naughty” because they know their dolls will grow up to be the best mamas and daddies in the world—just like them.

People all around the world, in places like Russia, China, Germany, New Zealand, Guatemala, Peru, Africa, and fifty other countries are laughing with joy because after applying the Biblical principles found in our books they finally have happy and obedient children.

Even my chickens are laughing . . . well, actually it more like cackling, because they just laid another organic egg for my breakfast and they know that it was that same piece of ¼ inch plastic supply line that trained the dogs not to eat chicken....

In the middle of January 2009, we held a seminar in southern California. The three sessions were packed out with 1200 happy souls. LISTEN TO MY DREAM is a 39-page children’s book written by Debi Pearl as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The book is written in poetic verse and colorfully illustrated by Debi and her husband Michael Pearl. The last few pages of this soft back book include a summary of the Civil Rights movement in the United States and the crucial role Dr. King played in leading that movement.

Debi Pearl grew up in the Memphis, TN area during the 60’s. She saw firsthand how Jim Crow laws forced people to conduct themselves differently based upon a person’s color. She heard the speeches, the arguments, saw the turmoil and experienced the upheaval when Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis. She lived to see the ‘Whites Only’ signs removed. Debi knew what it was like before Dr. King.

They had never known what it was like to be forbidden to extend a kindness because someone was a different color. They had never known what it was to see hatred based upon color. The local library had only one children’s book on this historic figure. So Debi wrote LISTEN TO MY DREAM over 20 years ago to fill this gap in her children’s education. An unsuccessful attempt at publishing left the little volume in a forgotten corner of her office until this past year when it was re-discovered by another child that had never heard the stories. As of July 2009 Michael Pearl was ranked 4th in the expert division by the International Knife Throwing Hall of Fame. Son, Gabe Pearl, was ranked 8th in the intermediate division.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN

If you're a subscriber to No Greater Joy Magazine, you may have noticed a recurring theme: Children are expected to work!!?? Only, this is not the work of a person that commands another to do what he could do for himself. This is work with a purpose.

Why would an able-bodied man or woman have a child do something that could more easily be done (and more quickly) without the child's involvement?

Every kid is lazy unless he is taught to work. And no one is taught to work with words or admonitions any more than someone can develop muscles in a classroom learning about muscles.

If you are going to raise godly, responsible, disciplined children, you must begin early, before they are one year old, teaching them the rudiments of work. There is no alternative.

“It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth” (Lamentations 3:27).

Mike & Debi's son, Nathan Pearl wrote about his experience in taking the time to work with his daughter:

As she sat there holding “her” hammer asking an endless stream of questions on a plethora of topics, what I was actually teaching her was that she is more important to me than my job. Today as we sat on the roof, her child-like question was, “What that doing, Daddy?” It seems rather meaningless, but if I take time to answer her today, some day she will trust me enough to ask, “What do you think of him, Dad?”

HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE ME?

"Many parents rush along, demanding clean rooms and finished homework, but take little pleasure in the simple things that delight a child. As we are steering them through the growing responsibilities of life, we must care more about the child’s joy in a thing more than about the thing itself. Many mothers take away a child’s joy of work and play through their need for a perfect product from the child. Many daddies suck the joy of family vacation time by demanding that the child swim correctly or water ski in the right way. When your goal becomes your need for a proper performance or product, then you have stopped loving the child and started loving your own ego. Our goal is not a perfect product; it is to instill in the child a love of learning, of doing, and the joy of creating something with his own hands.

A mother who stays busy maintaining a spotless house, but does not take the time to involve the children in her service, is doing them a disservice and is missing an opportunity to “grow” some love. A daddy who is busy working on his truck, but does not have the time to explain to his son what he is doing and provide an opportunity for him to participate in a meaningful way, is not fellowshipping with his son, is not teaching him to love anything or anyone, is giving him no pleasure, and he is not taking pleasure in his son. A mom who prepares evening meals, but does not daily take the time to encourage her little girl to stir the dough, is missing incredible opportunities to make love and creativity grow and bloom. A dad who is working on the computer finishing the construction of a family web site, but does not have time to sit his little ones on his lap and show them how to draw a face on the screen, has not yet mastered the wonderful thing called love.

My children bounce and clap and sing along as we listen to the pidgen song. They LOVE the fun lyrics and sing their own version that includes words like "big pig" . . .

I tell them the story about how a young girl trusted God to carry her to the farthest reaches of the world, beyond the modern conveniences we take for granted, to a people that didn't know God cared for them.

That's right. You heard it here. A while back, one of Michael Pearl's own grandchildren in exasperation with her brother uttered words that seemed to have just the right cadence and smack to express her utter frustration --

"JOE!!! You DOUGHNUT COCONUT COCONUT COCONUT!!!"

-- much to the delight of everyone listening.

That grandchild's mother is Rebekah (Pearl) Anast. At the grown-up age of 12, she penned the following verse:

There’s a hole in my shoe,
And my toe is coming through,
There’s a scab on my knee
Cause I fell so gracefully,
There’s a patch on my eye
Cause the ball didn't go by.
There’s a song on my tongue,
But it’s stupid cause I’m young.

A poetic streak seems to run in that family line, and it seems to come with quite the sense of humor.

Good & Evil Comic Book

How would you communicate the story of the gospel to people who had never read the Bible and had no interest in doing so? Storytelling is a powerful teaching tool that many missionaries employ. Using simple illustrations, they tell the story of God and man in a systematic, chronological way that places the message in its proper context. But this method only works if you have a missionary to accompany the illustrations.

For Michael Pearl the need for an illustrated book that could both tell and illustrate this story came into sharp focus when his daughter Rebekah was on the mission field in Papua New Guinea. There was not a complete, well-done, inexpensive illustrated Bible story book available. Together with his wife, Debi Pearl, they prayed for a way to make the dream a reality. It was during this time that they met Danny Bulanadi, a retired Marvel Comics artist. Together they worked for nine years to produce what is now known as the book Good and Evil.

Good and Evil is a bold missionary. It can squeeze its way into closed countries where missionaries are not allowed. Its fantastic art, done in the tradition of Marvel Comics by one of their best artists, will make it popular where other gospel literature would be rejected or destroyed. You can walk up to a Muslim or Buddhist street vendor and give him a box of these books and he will sell them, not caring that they advocate Christianity. After all, profit first. These little missionary books will keep telling the message over and over again as they lie around waiting for someone else to pick them up. In many cases a single copy will be read by as many as 100 people. That would be just one cent per person to communicate the message of Christ.

It is our mission to send these little paper missionaries forth into every little nook and cranny on the globe, that every man, woman, and child may hear the good news of Jesus Christ. To that end, it is our vision to translate Good & Evil into 100 languages in one year. This is no easy task, but neither is it an unreachable goal.

What began as a dream to offer the good news in many languages has grown again. Now No Greater Joy Ministries is in the process of creating a film version of the book Good and Evil. Professional filmmakers and studios are now being employed to bring this work of art to film. In this way, the translation of the story would only require the spoken voice tracks to be changed while the visual illustrations remain the same.
